Used Oil Recycling in Montebello is more than just a program, it is a comprehensive management system designed to educate our residents and protect the environment from harmful chemicals that can pollute our air, land, and even water through a variety of methods. The presentation in this section will provide you with information on the proper methods to manage your used oil and prevent contamination, by providing best management practices and step by step process to protect our natural resources.
There are many reasons for DIY’ers to properly recycle your used oil and filters but perhaps the most important reason may be our own health. Some people don’t think that the spot on the driveway or parking lot is a problem even when it can be seen when it rains but did you know that the same oil can be one of the major polluters of our rivers in waterways? That's right. When it rains oily discharge on the street can run into the City’s storm drains and cause environmental impacts for many years because of the many toxic substances that can be found and used oil. Overtime, these oily deposits can build up in storm drains and eventually make their way into the oceans and waterways. While Montebello is far from the ocean, many areas of our City have soft permeable soil which can allow that oily water and discharge to seep into the pockets of groundwater that can be found in and around the City.
Did you connect the difference by properly managing your used oil and filters? Whether you're an occasional DIY’er or a seasoned professional, using certified centers (CCC’s) to properly manage your used oil is simple and easy to do in Montebello with four Certified Collection Centers available to accept your oil and filters at locations conveniently located near you. According to studies published by CalRecycle, young adults comprise the majority of the DIY’ers in the state and as we grow older we tend to change our own oil less, leaving it to others to perform these services. Does this mean that older DIY’ers should stop recycling their used motor oil and filters? The answer is obviously “No”, it just means that we need to do a better job and passing the information on to the next generation.
